Hello, everyone. And welcome to Yo Trump! Yo Biden! Where you at? I'm your host, Dr. Josh Franco, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Cuyamaca College. Welcome to Episode 5: The Blue Wall? Today on the campaign trail, all four candidates we're out and about trying to rebuild the Blue Wall or to tear it down. The Blue Wall refers to the states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, that have typically gone for democratic candidates for president. But surprisingly enough, back in 2016, they went for Donald Trump. A total of 11 events were held on the campaign trail. Four by President Trump, two by Vice President Biden, who was joined by President Obama, two by Vice President Pence, and three by Senator Harris
First up was Vice President Pence, who spent a day in North Carolina, seeking to rally the base and to shift the message from COVID to the economy.Vice President Mike Pence:
And on the economy, on the economy, I have to tell you, after Joe Biden spent the previous eight years trying to tax and spend and regulate and bail us back to a growing economy, president Donald Trump created the greatest economy in American history, and we're doing it again. I mean, I don't know if you saw them, but how about those new GDP numbers that came out this week? Man, the American economy grew by more than 33% in the third quarter. It shattered any previous record by far, the great American comeback is on. And with four more years of President Donald Trump in the white house, we're going to bring this economy back bigger and better than ever before.Dr. Josh Franco:
North Carolina, with its 15 electoral votes and a very competitive senatorial race were incumbent Thom Tillis is being strongly challenged by democratic candidate, Cal Cunningham, the presence Vice President pence in the state should be helpful to their efforts. A few states north, Vice President Biden was joined by former president Barack Obama in the Wolverine state of Michigan. With its 16 electoral votes Michigan has been a crucial part of the blue wall. But in 2016, that portion of the wall fell to Donald Trump. In thinking to motivate new and old voters alike, President Obama sought to remind folks of what's on the line with this election.President Barack Obama:
Three days Flint. Three days until the most important election of our lifetimes. I love you too. Listen. I know right now, you got the Michigan-Michigan State game. And that's a big deal. Paul Bunyan trophy is on the line, but this Tuesday, everything is on the line. Our, jobs are on the line. Our healthcare is on the line. Whether or not we get this pandemic under control is on the line. But here's the good news. On Tuesday, you can choose change. On Tuesday, you can elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. You can choose a better America. And what's even better news is you don't have to wait until Tuesday to cast your ballot. Michigan. You can vote in person right now.Dr. Josh Franco:
After President Barack Obama made abundantly clear what's at stake in this election. Vice president Biden went after President Trump's taxes, his response to COVID, and what he sees as the president's efforts to undermine social security in a potential second term.Vice President Joe Biden:
He paid $750 in taxes. The one year we know of. He's yet to release, I released 22 years of my tax returns. You can go online and look, he hasn't released one. He talks about corruption. What is he hiding? He owes 41 million bucks out there. Who's he owe it too? If you notice he's the only president I know of their secret bank account in China. Paid 50 times more taxes in Beijing than he's paying the United States. And this guy talks about corruption? Look, we're also going to act to protect healthcare, dropping the Republicans, just jammed through a Supreme Court nominee for one overwhelming reason. As Barack said, the president said, they were trying over 50 shots to take out Obamacare, destroy the Affordable Care Act. But they're going to be in court. I believe it's seven days after the election. Win or lose, they're going to be in court. If they get their way, a hundred million Americans will lose protections for pre-existing conditions, including more than 4 million Michiganders. Donald Trump thinks healthcare is a privilege. Barack and I think it is a right for people to have health care. We're not only going to restore Obamacare, we're going to build on it, are going to keep your private insurance. If you like it, and you can choose a Medicare like public option if you don't. We're gonna increase subsidies to lower your premiums and deductibles out of pocket spending reduced prescription drug costs by 60%. Look. We're going to make sure you keep the protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Meanwhile, Donald Trump laid out what he's going to do in his second term. If he's elected to social security, the actuary at the social security administration says if he gets that plan passed, it will quote bankrupt social security by 2023.Dr. Josh Franco:
With Vice President Biden and former president Barack Obama in Michigan. Senator Kamala Harris was holding down the fort in the battle ground, state of Florida. With its 29 electoral votes, this is a crucial state for both President Trump and Vice President Biden. Senator Kamala Harris continued the focus on the impact of COVID. But also on the racial reckoning that the country needs to confront head-on.Senator Kamala Harris:
So on the one hand you have Joe Biden, a student of American history, someone who has the courage to speak truth, who has the courage then to speak the phrase Black Lives Matter. Joe Biden, who says, look, it may be difficult to hear. It may be difficult for some to speak, but we got to deal with this. We've got to deal with our history. We've got to deal with the present. We need to deal with the fact that the racial disparities cross from our public health sector to our criminal justice sector, to the economy, to our education system. We got the fact that we've now figured out from COVID how these things manifest themselves to the point that African-American and Latino Americans are experiencing three times the contraction of COVID and dying at twice the rate of other populations. We need to speak that truth. Speak the truth that black women are three to four times more likely to die in connection with childbirth than other women. Speak the truth that our native American brothers and sisters have the highest rates of diabetes of anybody in our country.Dr. Josh Franco:
To round out the day. President Trump was rallying his base in the state of Pennsylvania. With its 20 electoral votes, this state is a crucial part of the Blue Wall that went red back in 2016 for President Trump.President Donald Trump:
Unless somebody comes along and says, let's quadruple your taxes. Let's put all those regulations back. In the past five months, we've created a record 11.4 million American jobs. That's another, I mean, think of it. It's never been done before and while foreign nations are in a free fall and you see that, and we don't want that, but you see what's going on is COVID or the China virus or the China plague is about 21 different names. We're creating the world's greatest economic powerhouse. And next year we'll be one of the greatest years, maybe the best year that we've ever had based on what's happening. A recent Gallup poll found, just out, that 56% of Americans say they are better off today than they were years ago with Obama and Biden. And that's rounding the turn. But that's during a pandemic, 56%, that's a record number 56. You're better off today than you were four years ago with Obama. And, you know, I watched him today. They draw flies, both of them. I thought maybe they put them together. They drunk a couple of horns, honk honk, honk, and most of them are, are people that are taunting. Did anybody see the picture of that crazy bus driving down the highway? The surrounded by like, hundreds of cars and they're all Trump flags all over them. It's like a hot. It's like a hot thing. See, that's really number one, trending. You know, they won't put that that's number one training. They come up with number one, trending. It's a, it's not a trend. It's whatever they want. Do you look at big tech? You look at what's been happening lately, right? You look at the media where they refuse to cover. What are the biggest scandals? No, but the biggest scandal is we caught them spying on our campaign. Right. We caught them trying to overthrow a duly elected, commonly known as me, President of the United States. Let's see what happens. Let's say what happens. Very dishonest. You're right. Well, that year, right? You know, there are a lot of people that call that treason. Okay. That's treason. What happens if Biden gets in the economy will collapse. Joe Biden is that diehard globalist who spent the last 47 years outsourcing your jobs, opening your borders and sacrificing American blood and treasure in endless foreign Wars in countries that many of you have never even heard of. I didn't hear of too many of them either, if you want to know the truth.Dr. Josh Franco:
Thursday, Friday and Saturday, President Trump and Vice President Biden had been going head-to-head in either the same or neighboring states. During that same timeframe, Vice-president Pence has visited multiple States throughout the country. What I found really interesting is that Senator Harris has been tracking from West to East over these past few days. She's bringing home their message that COVID, the economy, and the future of this country matters to everyone, but particularly people of color. Her ability to communicate with a constituency that's largely overlooked is a huge boon for the ticket. Senator Harris knows how to communicate with these constituencies, given her experiences in California and its diversity. There's a lot to be said about having someone on the campaign trail who can speak about the needs, the concerns, and the cares of minority communities throughout this country. We'll see how tomorrow goes. It's been another exciting day. Thanks for taking the time to listen to this episode. I appreciate your attention. And I look forward to our next episode. Take care and have a happy and safe Halloween.
